278 Inmates still on run two months after  Jailbreak,–NCoS confirms

The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) has confirmed that 278 convicts remain unaccounted for following a jailbreak at its Maiduguri facility on September 10.

The escape occurred after a severe flood damaged the walls of the correctional center, prompting 281 inmates to flee in search of safety. While some managed to escape during the chaotic flooding, the NCS reported that the majority of the prisoners are still at large.

In the aftermath of the jailbreak, Borno State police confirmed the recapture of three escapees—Auwalu Aminu, Abubakar Mohammed, and Kyari Kur. Additionally, seven more inmates were later apprehended.

Borno State Police spokesperson, Nahum Daso, stated that a large-scale manhunt is currently underway to locate and apprehend the remaining escapees. Authorities are intensifying their search efforts in a bid to track down the fugitives and restore order.

He said: “Efforts are still ongoing to arrest the other fleeing suspects, and we will ensure that we will keep on highlighting to the public our breakthroughs and achievements.

“Not less than four suspects have been re-arrested so far and handed over to the correctional service.”
