Federal Capital Territory (FCT) natives have accused the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, of reducing the revenue generation for area councils.
Danjuma Tanko, a prominent member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and elder statesman, condemned the perceived unilateral action taken by the minister, stating, “The idea by the minister to cut short revenue generation for the Area councils amount to abuse of democratic principles.”
Tanko stated that it is crucial to empower area councils to effectively address the needs of grassroots communities, stressing that they play a critical role in local governance and development initiatives.
“The developmental stride of the minister is concentrated on the urban areas, while the rural areas are left for the council chairman to attend to,” Tanko stated.
He urged the minister to reconsider the decision and allocate additional funds to support area councils in their endeavours.
“This single dichotomy and autocratic decision to appoint a minister to oversee the affairs of elected officials is absolutely undemocratic, and therefore, the people of Abuja desire a complete democratic structure, where any Nigerian can contest,” he added.
