Recent revelations have peeled back the curtain on a staggering reality: English clubs have collectively amassed over £1 million in finesfor player, manager, and official misbehaviour.
Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk found himself facing a massive £100,000 penalty for his outspoken critique of referee John Brooks, infamously calling him”a f***ing joke” after the VAR official confirmed the decision to send him off against Newcastle.
Chelsea’s Reece James was also in hot water, fined £90,000 for disputing a referee’s decision. Burnley boss Vincent Kompany faced a £10,000 fine for a fiery clash with referee Darren England in March, adding to the league’s tally.
The Premier League shoulders the lion’s share of these fines, with clubs like Aston Villa and Brentford facing heavy penalties of £180,000 and £175,000 respectively for failing to control their players in a fiery clash.
These fines, however, aren’t just limited to the top-flight; clubs across the Championship, League One, and League Two have also been handed penalties.
With 53 out of 92 clubs facing fines, it’s clear footballers need a crash course in keeping their cool – £100,000 doesn’t grow on trees, after all.
