A somber mood has enveloped the boxing community following the passing of Nigerian London boxer Sherif Lawal.
The 29-year-old tragically lost his life after collapsing in the ring during his professional debut on Sunday.
Lawal faced Malam Varela in a scheduled six-round bout at Harrow Leisure Centre. Reports indicate that the fight was well-matched until the later stages.
However, in the fourth round, Lawal sustained a blow and was unable to continue; referee Lee Every swiftly intervened, recognizing the seriousness of the situation.
“They both exchanged on the bell and the referee, Lee Every, pulled them apart. Lawal then came out with a high guard to start the fourth, he looked fine. He took the right hand to the temple and his back was to the ropes, he span round and then fell on his haunches.”
Sherif’s trainer, CJ Hussein, rushed to his aid after a medical emergency struck the boxer in the ring.
Medical professionals, including ringside doctors and paramedics, fought for Sherif’s life for over 15 minutes using CPR and a defibrillator.
Sadly, despite their valiant efforts, Sherif suffered a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at Northwick Park Hospital.
The remaining fights were rightfully canceled in the wake of this tragedy.
Condolences pour in for Sherif
The British Boxing Board of Control, led by General Secretary Robert Smith, expressed deeply to BoxingScene. He said,
“It’s a tragic incident and we’re all in shock. We’re now in the process of gathering all the reports from the officials, doctors, and paramedics to attempt to ascertain exactly what happened.
“His boxing medicals were all in order and we have a report from his GP stating he was fit and well. It’s an awful, tragic thing to happen.
“Condolences to the family of Sherif Lawal following his tragic passing. The thoughts of all those involved in boxing in Great Britain are with them at this difficult time.”
Warren Boxing Management, who represented Lawal, added, “We would like to send our condolences to all of Sherif’s family, friends, coaches and all those close to him at this tragic time.”
A young boxer, Sherif from Islington, tragically passed away earlier this year. Having started boxing in 2018, Sherif competed in the National Elite Championships last year and recently turned professional.
He was known as a motivating figure for the gym’s younger boxers, with trainer Hussein calling him “a real inspiration” according to the Camden New Journal.
