‘There was a time PDP was in charge of all the South East states Now, PDP has only one state’ – Hon. Chinedum Orji

In a recent interview with THE SUN, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji, the immediate past Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, addressed the common perception of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a weak party in the South East. Now a member of APC, Orji shared his perspective on the party’s growing influence in the region.

Orji dismissed claims of APC’s weakness, suggesting that the party was making significant progress and expanding its reach in the South East. He pointed out the political shift in the region, noting that while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) once controlled all South Eastern states, it now holds only one. In contrast, APC has taken control of two states.

He attributed this success to the party’s efforts in mobilization, campaigning, and sensitization, which he believed were key factors in its expansion. Orji suggested that with continued efforts, APC could secure more states in the future. He expressed optimism about the upcoming Anambra election, indicating that the APC might perform unexpectedly well.

In his words: “Well, they keep saying APC is weak, APC is this, APC is that, in the South East! But the party keeps making progress and expanding. Remember, there was a time PDP was in charge of all the South East states. Now, PDP has only one state. APC that they said is weak is now holding two government houses now in South East. Nobody would say that the party is weak in the zone. With two states and massive mobilisation, campaign, and sensitization, APC can take more states. The Anambra election is coming in one and half years. You could be shocked about what may happen there in respect of APC performance. A lot of our people want to play national politics. The consciousness is increasing.”
