Looting Lamentations: #EndBadInGovernanceInNigeria Protests Go Wild with Tragic and Comic Turns!
The #EndBadInGovernanceInNigeria protest, which kicked off today nationwide, has taken a wild turn in Northern Nigeria. Igbo History can confirm that the protests have escalated into full-blown chaos in some cities.
In Suleja, Niger State, six protesters have tragically lost their lives, and many others are injured as security forces attempted to dismantle a barricade on the Abuja-Kaduna road. The outnumbered police force called for backup, leading to a chaotic scene with sporadic gunfire.
Meanwhile, in Kano, things took a comically disastrous turn as protesters looted the uncommissioned Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) Industrial Park. The not-yet-opened ICT center was raided and set ablaze, with youths seen making off with everything from desktop computers to office chairs.
Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, lamented the setback on X, noting that the newly built Digital Innovation Park in Kano, set to support the 3MTT technical talent accelerator, was destroyed. The center was also slated to host a buildathon holiday program for secondary school kids next week.
Similar scenes of pandemonium were reported in Yobe, Lagos, Borno, and Gombe, where police resorted to using teargas on peaceful protesters.
Organizers of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Protest, also dubbed the #HungerProtests, aimed to voice the masses’ frustration with the country’s economic situation and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies. The protest is scheduled to continue from August 1 to 10, 2024.
