Obaseki’s Flawed Strategy: Exploiting Rema’s Popularity for Political Gain

Godwin Obaseki’s recent effort to position his protégé, Asua Ighodalo, as his successor has taken a questionable turn. In a transparent attempt to win over the youth of Edo State, he plans to leverage the immense popularity of musician Rema, who is adored by the younger generation. This desperation was starkly displayed today when top officials from the Edo state government, donning Ighodalo’s campaign caps, greeted Rema at the Benin Airport, leaving little doubt about Obaseki’s true intentions.

Obaseki’s strategy seems to mirror the ‘Davido Effect,’ which played a crucial role in his uncle’s victory in the Osun State governorship election in 2022. However, he seriously underestimates the political acumen and discernment of Edo youths, who are known for their intelligence and ability to see beyond political maneuvering.

This move not only attempts to manipulate the youth but also reveals Obaseki’s escalating desperation. The politically aware and active youth of Edo will not be easily swayed by such shallow tactics. This strategy is doomed to fail, and Obaseki would be wise to reconsider his approach.

Despite this political landscape, I wish Rema a successful show and hope he can steer clear of the murky waters of Edo politics.
