The Federal High Court in Abuja has authorized a lawsuit aimed at compelling the Federal Government to investigate Alhaji Bello Matawalle, the current Minister of State for Defence and former governor of Zamfara State, due to serious allegations of banditry.
The lawsuit was filed by human rights activist Abubakar Dahiru, who seeks to uncover Matawalle’s alleged involvement with bandits during his time as governor from 2019 to 2023.
The case, identified as FHC/ABJ/CS/1434/2024, names President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) as defendants. Dahiru, represented by lawyer Ojonimi Apeh, is requesting the court to declare that President Tinubu must instruct the IGP to investigate the activities of bandits and kidnappers in Zamfara State, focusing particularly on Matawalle’s role in the ongoing crisis.
Dahiru’s filing highlights the severe impact of banditry during Matawalle’s governorship, stating, “During Matawalle’s time as governor, armed banditry escalated to unprecedented levels, leaving thousands of citizens in Zamfara State displaced, orphaned, or widowed due to the violence.”
He also referenced numerous interviews and articles that accuse Matawalle of supporting banditry. These claims include allegations that he provided vehicles to bandits, sabotaged law enforcement efforts, and granted amnesty to terrorists.
As the case unfolds, many eyes will be on the court’s decision regarding the investigation into these serious allegations against Matawalle.
