House of Reps Deputy Speaker mourns, criticises beheading, dismembering of couple’s bodies

Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has condemned the horrific killing of Jacob Udo and his wife, Comfort, who were tragically murdered by unknown assailants in the Isiala Autonomous Community of Bende Local Government Area, Abia State.

The couple, originally from Itumbuzor in the same local government area, were reportedly beheaded and dismembered on Tuesday night by unidentified attackers.

In a statement by the Deputy Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, the Deputy Speaker, who represents the Bende federal constituency, denounced the violent act as unacceptable and a violation of the fundamental right to life. He described the murder as barbaric and emphasised that no grievance could justify such inhumane actions.

Kalu extended his condolences to the families of the victims and urged the state government and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime.

Additionally, he called for calm and restraint within the communities in the constituency, warning against potential reprisal attacks. Kalu reassured the public that the authorities would take necessary actions to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

He said: “I unequivocally condemn the brutal killing of the couple. This shocking act of violence contradicts humanity’s basic principles. My thoughts are with the victims’ families and their loved ones.

“I urge the authorities to investigate and bring perpetrators to justice. We stand together against violence and extremism, advocating for a culture of tolerance, respect, and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

“We urge all members of our community to remain calm and exercise caution to prevent escalation.

“The safety and well-being of our citizens are of utmost importance. We understand the emotions and concerns but violence or reprisal attacks will only lead to further suffering and division.”
