Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has clarified the reasons behind his decision to suspend Mr. Bemsen Mnyim, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. Alia stated that Mnyim did not adhere to the rules of the administration.
On Wednesday evening, the governor’s office, through Chief Press Secretary Tersoo Kula, announced Mnyim’s immediate suspension. The decision came after Mnyim allegedly involved the state in a lawsuit with certain other state governments. This lawsuit challenges the legality of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), claiming it was not established according to Section 12 of the 1999 Constitution.
Governor Alia expressed his concerns, stating, “I feel quite disturbed and uncomfortable with the position of my Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. Benue State has been rogued by past governments, and we are only seeing how we can get something back to develop the state. We have been deprived of our financial resources here in the state.”
He emphasized that pursuing legal action against the EFCC, which helps recover stolen state funds, contradicts the administration’s goals. Alia asserted, “So why would we go back to say we are taking these people to court for proscription? That is not the position of Benue State.”
The governor noted that maintaining communication is crucial for those representing the state. He added, “Any person who is representing the state must revert to the state… You cannot be a lone wolf making your own personal decisions for the state. It is highly unacceptable.”
Alia criticized Mnyim for speaking on behalf of the government in a matter contrary to its stance, declaring, “As I am speaking here, the Attorney General stands suspended until he explains fully, and we are satisfied to have him back with us.”
He concluded by reinforcing his administration’s commitment to accountability: “If you do not play by the rules, you will answer for it. There are rules of conduct, and we must keep to them. I cannot have saboteurs within the system.”
