Renowned Nigerian Journalist Dr. Ngozi Anyaegbunam Dies At 67 – Green White Green

Dr. Ngozi Anyaegbunam, one of Nigeria’s prominent female journalists, has passed away at age 67 after a brief illness. Born on October 9, 1957, she was celebrated for her impactful career as a journalist, media consultant, author, and lecturer.

Though details of her death remain unclear, her son, Rocky C. Agbese, shared a statement on behalf of the family. “With gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the untimely death of Dr Ngozi Fidelia Anyaegbunam after a brief illness,” he wrote.

Dr. Anyaegbunam was a trailblazer in journalism, becoming the first female editor at ‘Champion Newspaper’ and later working with ‘The Daily Times’. She authored ‘Waziri Ibrahim: Politics Without Bitterness’ and achieved the notable distinction of being a female journalist who interviewed two sitting Nigerian presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari.

Her son’s statement continued, “A dedicated and loving mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, and friend, Auntie Ngozi will be sorely missed by all who came across her and were impacted by her larger-than-life presence. Rest in Peace till we meet to part no more!”

Dr. Anyaegbunam’s educational journey included studies at Modebe Memorial Primary School, Girls’ High School Umunya, and Women Teachers’ Training College, before she went on to the University of Jos in 1976. After graduating in 1980, she obtained higher degrees from the University of Calabar, where she also lectured, eventually becoming the Head of the Department of General Studies in 1986.

She later moved to Lagos to join ‘Champion Newspaper’ as Woman Editor and served on the editorial boards of both ‘Champion’ and ‘The Daily Times’. Transitioning from journalism, Dr. Anyaegbunam became a consultant and media strategist, working with various organizations, including the National Population Commission, Guinness Nigeria, and the United Nations Development Programme.

Dr. Anyaegbunam received numerous accolades, including a Certificate of Recognition from ‘Daily Times’ in 1992, the Award of Excellence from the National Council of Women Societies in 1994, and the Nigeria National Media Merit Award.

Her family announced that funeral details would be shared later.
