30 persons reportedly killed in another deadly multiple attacks; its only five – Police disagree – Crime Channels

No fewer than 30 people have been killed in multiple attacks across two Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State, with the violence affecting rural communities in Kastina-Ala and Logo LGAs.

The attacks occurred on Sunday and early Monday morning, leaving a devastating toll in their wake.

According to local sources, 10 bodies were found in Kastina-Ala, while another 20 were discovered in Logo, bringing the death count to 30.

The attacks were reportedly carried out by heavily armed assailants, with some locals suggesting that the attackers could be militia from outside Nigeria.

Chief Joseph Anawah, a community leader in Logo, provided further details, stating that over 300 armed men launched an assault on the Azege settlement and surrounding areas in Tombo Council Ward on Sunday, November 24, at around 7 a.m.

He described the attackers as well-equipped and noted that the local security forces were unable to repel them due to the attackers’ overwhelming numbers and superior weaponry.

The situation only changed when a military jet arrived, which helped drive the assailants to retreat. At least 20 bodies were discovered following the attack, and efforts to locate more missing persons are ongoing.

Justine Shaku, the Chairman of Kastina-Ala LGA, also confirmed that several attacks had taken place in his jurisdiction.

On Monday, November 25, another violent assault by suspected herder militias occurred at about 2 a.m. in Adabo village and Tse Gwebe settlement in Utange Council Ward, Shitile.

Shaku reported that the attackers killed numerous people, destroyed property, and looted homes, leaving the area devastated.

He emphasised that Benue State is under severe security threat from armed bandits.

Clement Kav, the Chairman of Logo LGA, added that the attackers claimed ownership of the Tombo land and alleged that the land belonged to them.

The assailants killed 17 people and injured 37 others. The state government has since mobilized additional security forces, and peace has been restored to the area.

Kav confirmed that no further cases of missing persons have been reported.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Catherine Anene, confirmed the attacks, stating that five bodies had been recovered from the Logo LGA incident.

The search for more victims continues as security agencies investigate the scope of the destruction and fatalities.
