Nollywood actress Lizzy Gold has issued an apology for violating Igbo cultural norms after sharing a video of herself wearing a masquerade and revealing her face—acts considered taboo in Igbo tradition. Women are traditionally forbidden from wearing masquerades and it is a taboo for anyone to expose their faces while dressed as one, yet Lizzy disregarded both rules and even shared the footage on social media.
In her defense, the actress described the act as “wearing a masquerade costume” and explained that it was done for a movie. She apologized for any offense caused, clarifying that her actions were not meant to disrespect the culture. Lizzy also stated that she believes there are no repercussions for her actions, citing her strong Christian faith and her mother’s role as a prayer warrior in their church.
While it is true that women are not spiritually harmed by wearing masquerades, the restriction stems from cultural respect rather than fear of punishment. The tradition exists to uphold respect for men’s roles in Igbo society, not to enforce spiritual consequences on women.
