What Enzo Fernandez did to Mason Mount at full-time of dramatic victory over Manchester United
Shortly after the final whistle at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening, Enzo Fernandez confronted Mason Mount. The duo had locked horns earlier in the clash when Manchester United were ahead but, following two late strikes from Cole Palmer, the Chelsea midfielder had the last laugh.
While Carney Chukwuemeka, Cole Palmer, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke and Trevoh Chalobah exchanged hugs and high-fives, Fernandez took the chance to let the Red Devil know how he and Blues fans feel. The World Cup winner barked a few words at Mount before pounding the Chelsea badge on his chest.
Raheem Sterling watched on before going over to congratulate Palmer. As Fernandez walked away, Mount only then appeared to respond, which reignited the fire in the Argentina international’s belly.
Not only was the Cobham graduate booed upon his introduction in the second half, but he was also heckled whenever he had the ball under his control. One supporter was often spotted holding a 2021/22 Chelsea away shirt with “JUDAS” and Mount’s former number on the back.
Large sections of the fanbase have rallied behind Fernandez and against the club’s former captain. Nevertheless, speaking to reporters after the game, Mauricio Pochettino tried to put his side’s performance into words.
“It was amazing because we deserved it,” he said. “We were the better team today. It was fair that we scored in the last minute. I think if you see everything, we started the game really well. The game was under control at 2-0 but then we made a big mistake.
“We suffered a big impact emotionally, an impact that was not easy to deal with. But in the second-half, we controlled the game. We conceded in transition. Of course, I’m disappointed with the way we conceded three goals because I think we should be better in this type of situation.
“But if you analyse the game, I think it’s a fair result. Three points for us and I think it’s an important finish at the end, creating the connection with our fans, the fans and the players. It’s a very good thing that happened today and it should be a turning point for us, the team to trust from the fans.”
