Anambra: Achebe Airport Records 400,000 Passengers, 7,000 Flights Since Inception
The Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri, Anambra State, has facilitated the travel of 400,000 passengers through 7,000 flights since it commenced commercial operations in December 2021.
The airport’s Managing Director, Martins Nwafor, disclosed this on Tuesday during a facility tour with the state Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor. Mr. Nwafor noted that while only two commercial airlines currently operate from the airport, discussions are ongoing to attract more airlines to the facility.
He also highlighted the airport’s plans to expand operations, revealing that airfield lighting systems are being installed to enable nighttime flights. According to him, the airport boasts the best runway in Nigeria, measuring 3.7 kilometers in length and 45 meters in width, capable of accommodating Boeing 748-800 series aircraft.
Mr. Nwafor announced plans for an Airport Trade Fair scheduled for December 1–7, coinciding with the third anniversary of the airport’s commercial operations. The event will serve as a platform for flight operators, passengers, and the general public to showcase products and foster economic and social interactions.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the airport will officially unveil its new name, Chinua Achebe International Airport, and erect a statue honouring the globally acclaimed literary icon.
In his remarks, the Information Commissioner, Law Mefor, emphasized that the airport is a key component of Governor Charles Soludo’s industrialization and tourism agenda for the state. He revealed that the governor had approved the construction of a VIP lounge at the airport and awarded the contract for the installation of airfield lighting systems.
Mr. Mefor also reiterated the strategic importance of the airport to the Anambra Mixed-Use Industrial City, a project aimed at unlocking the economic and industrial potential of the state.
The Chinua Achebe International Airport continues to position itself as a hub for regional connectivity and economic growth, reflecting Anambra’s commitment to infrastructure development and modernization.
