Atiku vows to keep contesting in Presidential elections as long as health allows

The 2023 presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has declared his intention to continue running for office as long as his health permits.

During an interview with the Hausa service of Voice of America in Abuja, Atiku was asked about his future plans for contesting. He responded that he will keep running for presidency as long as he is alive and in good health.

Atiku said: “Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy.

“Even the former US President Abraham Lincoln contested seven times before finally winning.

“However, given the current state of the PDP, it is clear that a single-handed effort will not suffice to win the election. Strong support and collaboration with other parties are required.”

By the time the next presidential election rolls around in 2027, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will be 81 years old.

Atiku has pursued the presidency six times, officially appearing on the ballot in 2007, 2019, and 2023.

Drawing inspiration from former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, who did not win the presidency on his first attempt, Atiku notes that he remains undeterred by his past electoral defeats.

Addressing the internal issues within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku emphasised the necessity for unity and strategic alliances with other political groups to secure a victory in the 2027 election.

Recently, speculation has arisen about Atiku forming a coalition with other parties. Last week, he met with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate from the Labour Party (LP).

“This is to anybody that thinks there is going to be a misunderstanding between me and Obi, let me assure you that not even a small issue is going to happen between us.

“Also, we are going to be behind anybody that will be chosen to represent us in the forthcoming elections.”
