Eureka Shipping, a six-year-old cement carrier joint venture between SMT Shipping and the CSL Group, has contracted Holland Shipyard Group to build a 12,500 dwt cement carrier for operation in the Great Lakes. The vessel will replace two older vessels when it delivers next year, while maintaining the same cargo capacity.
Key features of the newbuild include a diesel-electric propulsion system consisting of four generator sets, providing redundancy for both navigation and cargo operation; engines capable of operating on HVO biofuel; and two rudder propellers with 360-degree thrust, plus a powerful bow-thruster.
Eureka has also announced that another of its existing ships, the 8,600 dwt Sunnavik cement carrier has been fitted with two Ventofoil wing sails from Econowind.
