Everton learn FFP points deduction final decision ahead of Chelsea showdown
Everton have been docked two points by the Premier League for breaching FFP regulations for the second time ahead of their game with Chelsea next weekend. The club were previously hit with a ten-point deduction, which was reduced to six points on appeal, before then being charged and subsequently found guilty over Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Premier League clubs are currently allowed to lose £105million over a three-year period. However, the Blues have once again gone beyond that threshold and have been slapped with another hefty penalty.
The punishment was dished out for a third year in their cycle (2022/2023), with the previous two years being part of the previous charge, which Everton successfully appealed in some part. The club now have seven days to notify the Premier League should they wish to appeal their latest punishment.
The latest deduction means the Blues are eight points worse off than they would have been this season, putting Everton into further relegation trouble. As a result, they are sitting 16th in the Premier League standings, only two points above the danger zone currently occupied by Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United.
Nottingham Forest were also reprimanded with a four-point deduction – as PSR continues to take hold across the Premier League – with title contenders Manchester City still waiting to discover whether or not they are in breach of the 115 charges they were hit with before Everton and Forest were accused.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are watching on with interest as PSR and FFP issues continue to dominate the footballing landscape. The Gunners in particular will be keeping a close eye on affairs with Everton playing Mikel Arteta’s side on the final day of the season.
Whether Arsenal, top of the Premier League by only one point, are playing a team in a relegation battle or not will be key as the title race continues apace.
“In January 2024, Everton were charged by the Premier League for breaching the permitted Profit and Sustainability thresholds for the assessment period ending 2022/23,” an Everton statement read.
“The matter was referred to a Premier League Commission, which has today announced Everton will receive an immediate two-point deduction. While the Club’s position has been that no further sanction was appropriate, the club is pleased to see that the Commission has given credit to the majority of the issues raised by the club, including the concept of double punishment, the significant mitigating circumstances facing the Club due to the war in Ukraine, and the high level of co-operation and early admission of the club’s breach.
“Everton remains committed to working collaboratively with the League on all matters relating to PSR but is extremely concerned by the inconsistency of different commissions in respect of points deductions applied. The club would like to place on record its thanks to the Fan Advisory Board and other fan groups for their submissions during this process, and to all Evertonians for their ongoing patience and unstinting support.
“The Club and its legal representatives have begun the preparations to appeal the Commission’s decision. No further comment will be made at this time.”
