A tragic shooting incident in Duluth, Minnesota, has left five people dead, including a man, his wife, his ex-partner, and two children, following the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Authorities identified the shooter as 46-year-old Anthony Nephew, who, according to police, had a history of mental health issues and had expressed anger over the election of President Donald Trump.
The incident unfolded on November 5, the day after Trump’s victory, when police discovered the bodies of Anthony Nephew’s ex-partner, Erin Abramson, 47, and their 15-year-old son, Jacob Nephew, at their home.
Both had died from apparent gunshot wounds. Shortly afterward, police identified Nephew as the suspect and found his wife, 45-year-old Kathryn Nephew, and their 7-year-old son, Oliver Nephew, also dead from gunshot wounds at their nearby residence.
In the days leading up to the tragedy, Nephew had posted multiple politically charged statements on social media, including anti-Trump and left-wing views.
On Facebook, he expressed fear of religious extremism and shared disturbing thoughts about his mental health.
In one post, he wrote: “My mental health and the world can no longer peacefully coexist,” and spoke of being “terrified of religious zealots” who he felt were imposing their beliefs on him and his family.
Nephew also voiced strong political opinions, criticising both major U.S. political parties and expressing disillusionment with the system. In one Facebook post, he wrote that he wished for better candidates to emerge from both parties, describing the choices as “fascism” and “not fascism.”
His mental health struggles were well-documented, with Nephew having previously written an op-ed for the Duluth News Tribune in 2021, in which he warned about the potential consequences of untreated mental health issues, including suicide or homicide.
He criticised the lack of support for mental health in America and the stigma surrounding it, noting that millions of Americans face mental health breakdowns without adequate help or understanding.
Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa confirmed that Nephew had a “pattern of mental health issues,” and police are continuing to investigate the incident, though they have not yet established a clear motive for the shootings. The police have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The tragic event underscores the complex intersection of mental health struggles, political polarization, and personal trauma, as authorities seek to understand the underlying factors that led to this devastating act of violence.
