Even though Manchester United was ahead well into injury time in what will undoubtedly go down as an all-time Premier League classic, they somehow lost 4-3 to Chelsea on Thursday.
Harry Maguire was booked after Manchester United’s historic 4-3 loss to Chelsea, which left him furious.
Chelsea won all three points thanks to a goal from hat-trick hero Cole Palmer in the 102nd minute, the latest in Premier League history. Chelsea had led 2-0 but were behind 3-2 heading into extra time. Maguire resisted referee Jarred Gilett inside the center circle following the final whistle of one of the most thrilling games in recent memory, but he was given a yellow card.
The England player’s complaints seem to have stemmed from the fact that Chelsea’s third goal was awarded from a penalty kick and that the match had lasted longer than the eight extra minutes that the fourth official had signaled. Maguire participated in every minute of the thrilling seven-goal match, which began with a goal from Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher early on.
Palmer’s first of three goals came in the 19th minute when he slotted past Andre Onana after United winger Antony gave away a penalty for Chelsea’s second. But, United answered just before the half, tying the score with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho.
Erik ten Hag’s team completed the comeback with a goal from Garnacho in the 67th minute, but Chelsea continued to press for an equalizer in the final moments of play, writing their own ending. After a protracted VAR check, Palmer scored again in the 100th minute when Diogo Dalot gave away a penalty, finally fracturing United’s resolve.
Man of the match and lifelong United supporter Palmer was in incredible space at a corner just 82 seconds later. He received the ball and fired a shot on goal that deflected in off Scott McTominay and sent Stamford Bridge into a frenzy. That was the moment when the dramatic evening came to an end, leaving Maguire and his teammates inconsolable.
Ten Hag lamented, “You cannot give it away like we did and we have to manage this game better,” in a post-match interview with TNT Sports. You can identify a player, but ultimately, it’s about the team’s performance.
“As a team, we had to deal with the chaos when it arose, but we made poor choices and failed to support one another.” We made poor choices while we were in possession. Additionally, I believe we were fortunate in the penalty situation at the end, though it was dubious and extremely lenient.
