In response to a tragic attack that claimed the lives of seven people, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has declared a state of emergency on security in Anambra State. The announcement follows Monday’s violent incident in Ihiala, where gunmen targeted security operatives and unarmed civilians.
Governor Soludo, in his statement, assured the people of Anambra that the state government would not relent until the perpetrators are brought to justice. He emphasized the collective responsibility of all citizens in combating insecurity, stating, “Security is not the sole responsibility of the government; every citizen must contribute to this fight.”
The deadly attack, confirmed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, occurred around 11:20 a.m. SP Ikenga revealed that the gunmen opened fire at a burial preparation venue before fleeing and shooting at two security operatives near the Local Government headquarters along the express road.
The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has launched an immediate manhunt for the assailants. “This unfortunate incident led to the deaths of seven people, including two unarmed passers-by. However, one victim was rescued by the Joint Security Team and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital,” SP Ikenga said.
During an on-the-spot assessment of the crime scene, the Commissioner interacted with eyewitnesses to gather more details. Expressing his condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Ihiala, he vowed that the attackers would face justice.
Governor Soludo’s decisive action reflects the urgency of the growing security challenges in Anambra State. The declaration of a state of emergency underscores his administration’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of all residents.
The governor called on Ndi Anambra to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, reiterating that there would be “no hiding place” for criminals in the state.
