The Governor of Benue State has suspended the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Mnyim, on Wednesday.
This decision came after Mnyim was involved in a group of states that are legally challenging the creation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Reports indicate that the Supreme Court reserved its judgment on this case, which was filed by 19 states. However, three of these states—Anambra, Adamawa, and Ebonyi—decided to withdraw from the lawsuit.
The Attorney General of Anambra, Professor Sylvia Ifemeje, informed the court that she wanted to withdraw her state from the case, filing a motion on October 20. Similarly, the Attorney General of Ebonyi, Ikenna Nwidagu, stated, “My Lord, I filed a notice of withdrawal dated and filed on October 21. My Lords, we pray this honourable Court strikes out the name of the 18th plaintiff.”
The governor was surprised that his state joined others in challenging the legality of these anti-corruption agencies. He decided to suspend Mnyim due to this involvement. During a press conference in Makurdi, the capital of Benue, he announced Mnyim’s indefinite suspension. He stated, “No matter how pressing or urgent the issue is, one must resort to due consultations with me or appropriately brief me and seek my permission before acting, especially in a sensitive matter such as this.”
The governor emphasized that his administration is focused on holding accountable those who have stolen from the state. He stated, “The EFCC and ICPC are assisting us in this effort. How can I now turn around and begin to challenge these watchdogs? I gave no permission for him to enter an appearance for the state. Because he acted on his own, I hereby suspend him indefinitely pending a satisfactory explanation of his actions.”
