Lieutenant General Taoreed, the current Chief of Army Staff, has declared that the Sit-At-Home protest in the South East region of Nigeria has become a thing of the past. He pointed out that the Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a self-determination movement seeking to re-establish an independent state of Biafra, has not made any recent announcements on their airbroadcast channel regarding the protest.
The IPOB had previously mandated that citizens in the South-East should refrain from daily activities every Monday as part of their campaign for secession. However, according to Lieutenant General Taoreed, the military intervention in the region has allowed citizens to resume their lawful business on Mondays without fear of reprisal.
In an interview with Channels TV, the Chief of Army Staff stated, “In the South East, the issue of illegal sit at home is a thing of the past. IPOB no longer comes on its channel to announce a Sit-At-Home in the South East. Normally they always do that every Monday and they order that there will be a Sit-At-Home. But today they have reinforced it in the mind of their people that after so many months, they should go about their lawful businesses on Mondays.”
Lieutenant General Taoreed also addressed the security measures implemented by the Armed Forces in the South-South region, which has led to a significant increase in crude oil output. He revealed that production has risen from approximately 900,000 to 1 million barrels per day, and at one point, it nearly reached 1.6 million barrels per day before other industrial factors caused setbacks.
