JUST IN; Govt confirms escape of six former Boko Haram Insurgents from custody

The government of Borno State has reported that six former Boko Haram insurgents have escaped from custody.

In a statement released on Thursday, Usman Tar, the state’s commissioner for information and internal security, confirmed that the individuals had surrendered as part of the state’s reconciliation program and fled without any weapons.

The statement reads: “Only six insurgents escaped, contrary to claims from certain media outlets quoting 13.”

He stated that the escapees were part of over 20,000 militants who had recently been processed and classified as low risk.

He continued: “These individuals had been thoroughly documented, profiled, and evaluated for their mental condition, susceptibility to extremism, and risk of relapse.

“The insurgents fled without any weapons and are currently being pursued. Initial findings indicate that reports suggesting they absconded with government arms are untrue.

“Historically, terrorists have sourced arms from covert channels and often display these in propaganda videos, but this should not be interpreted as government-issued weapons.”

He emphasised that the number of escapees is insignificant compared to those who have been successfully reintegrated.

Tar urged the public not to sensationalize the issue, warning that such actions could empower terrorists and undermine current counter-insurgency efforts.

He added that, “The government remains steadfast in its commitment to restoring peace and security across Borno state.

“Residents can rest assured that all necessary steps are being taken to maintain peace.”
