JUST IN; Protests erupt in Kano over dissolution of Emirates council law
Amidst the repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law, Gaya witnesses fervent protests as residents voice their dissent.
The law, originally enacted by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-controlled House of Assembly, served as the basis for the dethronement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II by ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2020.
Governor Abba Yusuf, in his recent assent to the repealed law, not only dissolved the four additional emirates established by Ganduje—Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi—but also instructed all monarchs, including Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, Emir of Gaya, to relinquish their positions to Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the Deputy Governor overseeing the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Residents had told Daily Trust correspondent that the ousted Emir vacated his palace at midnight on Thursday.
The notable presence of armed security personnel have maintained order in the town.
However, tensions escalate as locals, like Abubakar Shuaibu, express their discontent with the government’s decision.
Sunday morning sees a surge of protesters flooding the streets, brandishing placards and echoing anti-government sentiments.
They decry the dissolution of the emirate as unjust and politically motivated, underscoring deep-seated grievances within the community.
