In a concerted effort to rejuvenate the educational sector in Kogi State, the government has initiated dialogues with key stakeholders to strategize and ensure the effective implementation of education laws and policies.
The Commissioner for Education, Honorable Wemi Jones, disclosed this development during a stakeholders’ meeting held with parents and principals of public secondary schools in the state at the Government House in Lokoja.
Various stakeholders, including the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Parent Teachers Associations (PTAs), and the Academic Staff Union of Secondary School (ASUSS), among others, participated in the deliberations.
The initiative stems from the commitment and resolve of Governor Ahmed Ododo to restore the state’s educational prestige, aiming to revive the era when education was a source of pride.
Commissioner Jones emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of education in the state. He highlighted the achievements in the education sector under the previous administration and affirmed the current government’s commitment to build upon these successes.
Key milestones achieved include the enactment of the Kogi State Education Law 2020, implementation of Free Education Law, and the payment of fees for both internal and external examinations. Additionally, there has been a notable increase in the education budget and efforts to enhance infrastructure and human resource development.
Jones urged principals to acquaint themselves with the provisions of the Kogi State Education Law 2020 and assured full government support for its implementation. He cautioned against any form of malpractice that could undermine the free education policies, particularly regarding examination fees payment.
The Commissioner assured the release of the second batch of teachers’ recruitment upon approval from the governor.
In their responses, the Permanent Secretary of the Kogi Ministry of Education, Alhaji Musa Dele Yakubu, and the President of ANCOPSS, Kogi chapter, Mr. Suberu Omananyi, expressed appreciation for the proactive steps taken by the government. They pledged their cooperation and support towards advancing education in the state, expressing confidence that the resolutions made during the meeting would significantly improve secondary school education in Kogi State.
