Lakurawa militants on the run as Military personnel give them hot chase
Members of the Lakurawa armed group have been retreating as the Nigerian military intensifies its coordinated air and ground assaults on the group’s hideouts in Kebbi and Sokoto states.
The escalation follows a deadly raid on the Mera community in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi, where 17 lives were lost.
In response, the Nigerian Army swiftly deployed a battalion of troops to the region.
Upon arrival in Birnin Kebbi, the soldiers were briefed by the state’s deputy governor, Abubakar Umar Tafida, at the Cabinet Office before heading to Mera.
According to Abdullahi Idris Zuru, the Kebbi State governor’s media aide, the military successfully dislodged the attackers and recovered a significant number of cattle that had been rustled in the assault.
This military intervention came after an urgent appeal from Kebbi Governor Dr. Nasir Idris, who sought federal support to address the growing menace of armed groups threatening rural communities.
Zuru emphasized that the governor is committed to ensuring the safety of all Kebbi residents, prompting his call for federal assistance in the fight against terrorism.
In a related development, National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu assured Nigerians that the Lakurawa group, which has been terrorizing the northwestern states, would be eliminated.
Ribadu made this declaration on Wednesday during the 2024 Comptroller-General of Customs Conference in Abuja, where he represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“We will chase the so-called Lukarawa out of our country. We will put critics to shame and shut their mouths in no time.
“Boko Haram, which has been ravaging our country, is now on the run. Its members are now moving to other neighbouring countries because Nigeria is no longer conducive for their operations,” he said.
He also pointed out that signs of economic improvement are evident, highlighting increased crude oil production in the Niger Delta and fiscal reforms implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as key examples of these efforts.
“Crude oil production has hit 1.8 million bpd and the Central Bank has been sanitised; no one is taking a dime from the CBN. When we promised that we would fix this country, we will do so because President Tinubu has never been a failure,” he added.
