Lawmakers condemn alleged assault, arrest of colleague by Deputy Governor, call for apology – Crime Channels
The Abia State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the alleged mistreatment of Kalu Mba Nwoke, the member representing Ohafia South, during the state’ recent local government elections.
Nwoke was reportedly arrested on November 2, 2024, for allegedly storming the Ohafia Local Government headquarters with a group of thugs, a claim made by Chukwudi Eke Mba, the Chief Press Secretary to the Abia State Deputy Governor.
During a session on Wednesday, Ukwa West representative Godwin Adiele raised a motion denouncing the treatment of Nwoke, calling for an apology from Abia’s Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu. The motion was met with support from numerous members of the House.
Nwoke, in his own account, claimed he was physically assaulted and detained for 24 hours under the orders of the Deputy Governor after questioning why the local government secretariat was closed on election day.
He further alleged that his detention followed his protest over the lack of election result sheets at the polling stations.
However, Chukwudi Eke Mba, the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, denied the allegations of abduction, insisting that the arrest was not orchestrated by the Deputy Governor, and that Nwoke’s detention was not the result of any political interference.
