Nigerian Immigration has barred me from travelling abroad — Presidential candidate cries out
Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, has claimed that the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has placed him on a watchlist, effectively barring him from leaving the country.
In a statement and accompanying video shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Sowore expressed his frustration with the ongoing restrictions, stating, “The Nigerian Immigration Service continues to subject me to unwarranted harassment and abuse, repeatedly violating my rights. Today, they once again stopped me from exiting Nigeria, claiming I am on their WATCHLIST!”
The video features Sowore in dialogue with an NIS officer, requesting to speak with a superior for further clarification on the matter.
This isn’t the first time Sowore has encountered such issues; in September, he was held at Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos, where his international passport was seized.
As the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Sowore has gained a reputation as a vocal critic of the Nigerian government and has faced multiple arrests and legal battles over the years.
