Nine people confirmed dead as two trucks crush Tricycles with Passengers
A tragic early morning road accident in Oke-Elesin, Amuloko, within Oyo State’s Ona-Ara Local Government Area, resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including a primary school student and her mother, with several others critically injured on Monday.
The collision involved two trucks transporting soda drinks and tiles, as well as two tricycles, commonly known as “Keke Marwa.”
Eyewitnesses reported that one of the trucks lost control while descending the notorious Oke-Elesin hill, crashing into the other vehicles, including the Keke Marwa.
Six victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured are currently receiving medical care at a local hospital.
An eyewitness disclosed that, “The accident occurred early this morning. It was caused by brake failure on the truck as it descended the slope of the road. After losing control, it crushed a tricycle, or Keke NAPEP. Another lorry, carrying soft drinks, was following closely behind and, in an attempt to avoid the truck in front, collided with and crushed another Keke NAPEP.
“We learned that six people died, while five others were injured. They have all been taken away from the scene.”
Dr. Raji Wale, the Managing Director of Amuloko City Hospital, reported that four patients were admitted to his facility following the incident.
He said: “The accident occurred early this morning. Six victims were brought in with varying degrees of injuries, and some were taken to other hospitals. We managed to treat those brought here. Two were treated as outpatients and have been stabilised and discharged. Two children are still here. I was informed that one of the children was in the Keke NAPEP with his mother, who died.
“The other two, with severe injuries, have been admitted and are being treated. They have been stabilized, and we are continuing their care.”
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Oyo State, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, when contacted by Nigerian Tribune, confirmed the accident.
She noted that the accident would be officially confirmed once she receives a briefing from her field officers.
The area has however returned to normal, with security personnel, including members of Operation Burst, OYRTMA, the Police, Road Safety, Amotekun, and local vigilantes, working to ensure smooth traffic flow.
