Obaseki Addresses Hospital Demolition Allegations – Green White Green

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has responded to claims that his administration demolished the Central Hospital in Benin City to make way for the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA). He stated that these allegations are false, explaining that the hospital was taken down to create a better healthcare facility for the community.

Governor Obaseki made these remarks during the official unveiling of the MOWAA Institute and Campus in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. He emphasized that he has no regrets about the decision to demolish the Central Hospital.

To clarify his position regarding the backlash over the demolition, he said, “I am sure you heard of the criticism that we brought down a hospital and built a museum. But in two days, we are going to be commissioning one of the biggest hospitals in South-South Nigeria, here in Benin City.” He added, “We didn’t pull down a hospital for a museum; instead, we built a museum and are building a better hospital.”

While speaking to the diplomatic community, representatives from international museums, and other stakeholders at the event, Obaseki highlighted the job and investment opportunities the project would create. He noted that the museum would play a significant role in boosting tourism and economic growth in the state.

The governor reflected on his journey since taking office eight years ago, stating that he initiated a challenging and uncertain plan aimed at regenerating, restoring, and reforming Edo State. He insisted that his administration has acted in the best interest of the state, as any responsible government should.
