Oshiomhole opposes his Son’s appointment as Commissioner by Governor Okpebholo
The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, has disclosed that former Governor Adams Oshiomhole was against the nomination of his son, Cyril Oshiomhole, for the position of Commissioner for Health-designate.
Governor Monday Okpebholo made the appointment of Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole last Tuesday, as confirmed by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.
In an interview on Channels Television Wednesday, Idahosa defended Cyril’s appointment, emphasizing his qualifications as a seasoned medical doctor.
He explained that Cyril’s education, both in Nigeria and the United States, made him fully capable of serving in the role.
“Senator Adams Oshiomhole, like any father, supports his son, but Cyril’s destiny is his own,” Idahosa remarked.
“Cyril is a qualified professional, and his appointment is based on merit, not his father’s legacy. His qualification speaks for itself.”
Idahosa also refuted claims of nepotism and state capture, clarifying that Adams Oshiomhole had, in fact, opposed his son’s nomination.
“This decision was made by the governor, driven solely by Cyril’s competence and the vision for Edo State. Oshiomhole senior was not involved in the decision-making process,” he asserted.
When questioned about parallels to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s comments on state capture, Idahosa rejected the comparison.
“What’s happening in Edo is far from state capture; it’s about ensuring the right people are in place to deliver results for the people of Edo,” he added.
Regarding his own role, Idahosa emphasized that while he and the governor discuss cabinet matters, his primary responsibility as deputy governor is overseeing the Boundary Commission, which he chairs.
