The Bauchi State Police Command, on Wednesday, arrested a 23-year-old man named Sanusi Umar for allegedly raping a mentally-challenged 10-year-old boy.
The suspect was apprehended by operatives attached to Operation Restore Peace in the state.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, Umar lured the victim with a N30 sweet and led him to an isolated area behind the AIB filling station along Kofar Ran.
There, he allegedly forced the victim to undress and sexually assaulted him.
The victim reported the incident to the manager of the filling station, leading to Umar’s arrest. It was discovered that the suspect, originally from Jingino village in the Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State, had been in Bauchi State for about two years selling garden eggs at the AIB filling station.
Wakil mentioned that the suspect took advantage of the victim’s mental condition to commit the crime. The victim was taken to the hospital for tests, while investigations continue before the suspect faces charges in court.
“It has also been revealed that the suspect leveraged the unsound mental condition of the victim to perpetrate the heinous crime on him,” Wakil added.
The police spokesperson noted that the victim was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, alongside the suspect, where several tests were conducted to determine his health status.
“Investigations are still in progress, after which the suspect will be charged in court,” Wakil said.
