After leading Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten start to the 2023–24 season, Xabi Alonso has grown to be the most sought-after name in the managerial market.
Following a recent 3-0 thumping of Die Roten, Die Werkself are in the driver’s seat to win the Bundesliga and end Bayern Munich’s reign of terror.
Every elite team, including his former team Bayern Munich, that may have a managerial opening is vying for Alonso. Even though there isn’t a managerial opening at Los Blancos right now, two other former teams of his, Liverpool and Real Madrid, have also been linked.
Even though Real Madrid already has a solid coaching situation with the legendary Carlo Ancelotti in charge, it appears as though they have won the battle to sign Xabi Alonso before the summer transfer window even opens.
This is due to reports that Alonso has chosen to remain with the Bayer Leverkusen project for a minimum of one more season, since the team is virtually assured of a Champions League berth for the 2024–2025 campaign.
In the short term, Alonso is still dedicated to the Leverkusen project, but this also makes it more likely that he will leave the team later on when Real Madrid is prepared to replace Ancelotti with a more experienced manager.
Following Zinedine Zidane’s resignation, Real Madrid first brought in Carletto as a temporary replacement for the legendary Frenchman, with the intention of selecting a different manager to lead the team in the long run.
Alonso was mentioned at the Santiago Bernabéu at the time as a potential “coach for the future,” along with Raúl and even Julian Nagelsmann.
For Alonso, this is his future. Based on his achievements at his first major coaching job in Germany, he is already as good as any manager in the world.
With players like Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo Goes, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Endrick, Vinícius Júnior, and, most likely, Kylian Mbappé on a roster full of young talent, Alonso might hold the keys to the kingdom in Madrid.
With young, promising players in Leverkusen, the Spanish manager is already achieving amazing things. Just think of what he could accomplish if he had the full force of Real Madrid and their young superstars at his disposal.
The Spanish capital may be entering a new era as Carlo makes way for a player he once helped to greatness on his way to La Décmia. And Alonso’s goal in Madrid will be to win numerous more Champions Leagues.
Alonso has an extremely alluring sporting project offered by Liverpool, but Madrid is just too good to ignore. It seems that Alonso is content to wait for Madrid in order to enjoy the results of his efforts in the Champions League the following year with Leverkusen.
