Regina Vs Ignorant Nigerians: Lessons for Public Figures…
If I were Regina, I would apologise to Nigerian protesters for calling them ign0rant.
She may need the support of those Nigerians someday and they will remind her that she called them ignorant and ignore her.
Those who are privileged should be more careful in how they speak in public – you might be right but how you convey that message may hurt the feelings of those who are not as privileged as yourself.
I haven’t said a word about the protest myself. This is not because I have nothing to say but I understand that whatever I say at this point, for or against, will be interpreted SENTIMENTALLY and not logically. When the temperature is high, nobody listens with their brain. That’s why sometimes, as a public figure, you should understand the times. Know when to speak and when to be silent.
Your words should always be intentional and strategic. Do not speak when you are emotional – you will embarrass yourself and hurt your audience.
Again, this is why every public figure should have a coach or mentor. I still consult those ahead of me before taking a position on sensitive issues. A wise person is a regular person who is good at borrowing and sieving the wisdom of others.
Just imagine how people are now reminding Regina that her marriage is the sponsor of her privileged life. I even saw a comment where someone said he’s waiting for the day she’ll cry to social media to help her get justice from her connected husband. Those comments were unnecessary. I condemn such expectations – Ned Nwoko has never shown such behaviours. He has never dragged any of his wives to court over anything. So stop expecting Regina to cry to you for help. However, Regina should be careful. I always say that the distance between Wealth and Poverty is one wrong turn.
As public figures, we should speak to the public with respect but speak to power with boldness. We should stop showing power to the weak and showing weakness to the powerful. It reveals our own inner weakness.
