Rivers Assembly Speaker Accuses Governor Siminialayi Fubara of Undermining Rule of Law
Speaker Martins Amaewhule of the Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed deep frustration with Governor Siminialayi Fubara, accusing him of undermining the Constitution and ignoring the rule of law. Amaewhule’s criticism followed a Federal High Court ruling that dismissed a lawsuit brought by the All Peoples Party (APP), which sought to remove him and 26 other lawmakers. The court condemned the case as an abuse of legal process.
According to report from The Nation, Amaewhule claimed that Fubara consistently disrespects court rulings and actively attempts to remove legislators through various legal challenges orchestrated by proxies, including the APP. According to Amaewhule, Fubara’s actions stem from a fear of the rule of law and the principle of separation of powers. He asserted that the governor’s disregard for the judiciary is evident, accusing Fubara of governing Rivers State in violation of legal provisions.
Amaewhule emphasized that the court ruling reaffirmed his position as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, asserting that his office remains legitimate and uncontested. He also rejected claims that he and other lawmakers had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), maintaining that they have remained loyal to the PDP
