Gaining a spot in Manchester City’s first team is difficult. Despite his many admirable traits as a manager, Pep Guardiola has rarely demonstrated a willingness to give academy players a lot of playing time at the Etihad, with Phil Foden being the only player to successfully make the move from the youth teams to the starting lineup. One wonders how much talent Chelsea might lose out on if they don’t make the transition into the matchday squad a little simpler, considering how excellent Cole Palmer has been at Chelsea since being cut loose by City last summer.
Even though Palmer effectively led Chelsea’s attack by himself for significant portions of the season, Palmer isn’t the only incredibly gifted young player the club is producing that makes City feel regretful. Although Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb are both on the fringes of the first team and are full internationals for their respective nations, there might be another player on the roster who, with the right development, could have an even greater impact for City and Guardiola.

Claudio Echeverri, an 18-year-old attacking midfielder from Argentina, was purchased by City from River Plate in January for an alleged £12.5 million plus add-ons. He was then loaned back to the team for the balance of the season. And given the way he’s begun the new campaign in his native nation, City will want to bring him along as quickly and far as Guardiola will allow.
El Diablito, or “The Little Devil,” is the nickname given to Echeverri, who stands 5’7″ tall in studded boots. The moniker alludes to Echeverri’s diminutive stature, dribbling prowess, and reference to the nickname of Marco “El Diablo” Etcheverry, a legendary player from Bolivia who was also nearly named after him. The way he runs fast at defenders with the ball glued to his feet, though, is at least as similar to Foden as it is to watch him play.
He dribbles similarly to Foden, hunching slightly over the ball as he skillfully and quickly slips past tackles. Though his game is well-rounded, his ball-carrying abilities are what have drawn the most attention thus far. In the Argentinean domestic game, he has already left many, many more seasoned defenders for dead.
He can score goals; in a recent game against Gimnasia, he scored an incredible first goal for River by darting into the penalty area, slamming past a defender who was totally confused by a foot flick, and smashing the ball with his preferred right foot into the roof of the net on the angle. He can produce some incredibly impressive power with his shots, considering his small stature. Even though it was perhaps his first goal as a professional, he has scored 12 goals for Argentina’s Under-17 team in 20 games, including a hat-trick against Brazil in the World Cup.

Nor is his demise inconsiderate. Because of his skill at locating his target, moving the ball quickly, and playing people into space, he is extremely hard to stop because it is impossible to predict whether he will run or pass and he makes decisions very quickly. With his level of skill and quickness in his play, he is a very promising player.
He’s far from perfect, of course; his slightly leaden first touch makes it difficult for him to recover from situations quickly. As a result, he lacks the instantaneous control of a player like his idol, Lionel Messi, but given his level of technique and rate of improvement, you wouldn’t rule out him eventually adding that to his repertoire. He appears to be a really talented player.
In a manner that they ultimately failed to do with Palmer, City will have to look after him and ensure that he has the opportunities he needs. They trained the Chelsea player to have every quality required for success, but they only gave him a limited opportunity to make an impression in the senior squad. In that sense, it was probably a wise decision to leave Echeverri on loan at River. He ought to have completed his first full season of elite football by the time he finally travels to Manchester.

It’s not that his lack of experience has stopped him from having a stellar start to the Argentine season. In addition to the goal against Gimnasia, he has already contributed two assists, one of which came in a 2-1 Supercopa victory against Estudiantes. Although the Argentine campaign is still in its early stages, Echeverri appears to be the best player in the nation at the moment.
