Plateau State have once again witnessed another tragedy as terrorists swooped on a community in the Wase local government area of the state, leaving more than 40 people dead, while several other sustained various injuries, and several houses were equally burned.

According to Tribune Online, the attack occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Monday, when terrorists armed with sophisticated weapons invaded Zurak village on motorcycles, indiscriminately opening fire on residents.

Eyewitness Abdullahi Musa, who survived the ordeal, recounted that the assault was completely unexpected. He added that although the community’s vigilantes attempted to repel the attackers, they were overwhelmed by the bandits’ superior firepower.

He said: “The attack came to us as a surprise because we have no issue with them. They came in large numbers and opened fire on the residents at random, killing more than 40 people. The majority of those killed were vigilantes.

“Several houses were equally burned in the course of the deadly operation. We could not alert security agencies on time because of a bad communication network, so it took several hours before they could come to our aid.”

The attack lasted for more than an hour with some residents of the community, mostly women, injured and receiving treatment at the nearby hospital.

Youth leader Mallam Sahpi’i Sambo confirmed the incident, stating that the bandits arrived on motorcycles, killing more than 40 people and injuring many others.

The once-thriving community is now deserted, as inhabitants have fled to neighboring communities and the local government area’s capital for safety.
