South-East Lawmakers Petition Inspector General of Police Over #IgboMustGo Campaign in Lagos, Demand Trial of Sponsors
Members of the National Assembly from Nigeria’s South-East region have petitioned Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun over a “hate campaign” demanding that Igbos leave Lagos and other Southwest states. The petition, dated August 4, 2024, highlights a viral social media post from July 27, 2024, announcing a planned #IgboMustGo protest from August 20 to 30, 2024, sparking widespread outrage.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos condemned the campaign, calling it reckless and divisive. The South-East lawmakers, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and Igariwey Enwo, stressed that the campaign contravenes the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of movement and residence for all citizens. They urged the IGP to identify and prosecute the individuals behind the campaign and the social media account promoting it.
