Stop talking about personal political ambitions, focus on building PDP – Saraki slams Party members

Ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki has urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to put aside personal ambitions and prioritise the unity and future of the party amidst its ongoing leadership turmoil.

Speaking to PDP members in Abuja, Saraki emphasised that the party’s long-standing legacy should not be jeopardized by individual aspirations.

Saraki’s call for unity comes at a critical time as the PDP grapples with internal divisions, many of which began during the run-up to the 2023 presidential election.

Prominent party figures, including Nyesom Wike, Governor Seyi Makinde, and several former governors, were openly critical of the party’s presidential candidate, contributing to deep fractures that have persisted beyond the election.

Since the loss in 2023, the PDP has struggled with leadership challenges, and Saraki’s remarks reflect growing concern over the party’s future. He called for a collective focus on rebuilding the PDP, stressing that the party must overcome internal disputes to reclaim its position as a leading force in Nigerian politics.

However, Saraki said: “The party was built on ideas, philosophies, and policies. Let us move away from building ideas on personal ambition. We cannot have an ambition if we don’t have a party. We cannot have a party if we don’t have ideas. This is where it starts.

“Let us stop talking about who is running for councillor, governor, or president in 2027. Let us focus on what the PDP represents. What are the issues and policies that we must address? This is what Nigerians want to know.

“The message we send to Nigerians is that this is a serious party. We are leaders. Let PDP lead in that way.”
