The crisis began on January 22, 2021, when a disagreement over the leadership of the Effium Motor Park in Ebonyi State sparked a violent confrontation between the Ezza and Effium communities. The conflict rapidly spread, engulfing the entire area and resulting in the loss of numerous lives.

Eyewitnesses reported that the clash started when a group of Effium youths, allegedly backed by their leaders, attempted to take over the park from the Ezza people, who had been managing it. The situation quickly deteriorated, with both sides engaging in fierce fighting, destruction of properties, and displacement of innocent people.
