She said that her son was an obedient child who used to go to the mosque to pray. He was friendly to other children in the neighborhood. However, her son later changed and would spend most of his time alone.
Two days before his disappearance, he took some of his clothes and instructed her to give them out to his friends, claiming that they were small. The following day, when he went to the mosque to pray, he didn’t return.
The following day, they went to his friends, but he was nowhere to be seen. Her friend advised her to talk to a journalist, who was their neighbor. He posted the picture of her son on social media to trace him and stop him from going to Somalia, as there were cases of children and adults joining militia groups in the area.
The next day, she received a call from Somalia threatening to kill her son upon arrival for putting his disappearance on social media. Meanwhile, the government believed that parents were paid to give out their sons to militia groups.
She left her two children and went into hiding for four months until she couldn’t leave the house. One day, her son called her and apologized for what he did. She lived in fear of what her son was going through.
Four years later, she received a call from a man who informed her that her son died in Mogadishu as a suicide bomber. The news broke her heart. She has advised parents to be close to their children to know their secrets.
