Togo Rejects Ghana’s Request for AFCON 2025 Venue Amidst Rivalry with Nigeria
In a surprising turn of events, the Togo Football Federation (TFF) has rejected a request from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to use the stadium in Lomé for Ghana’s home matches in the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers. This rejection follows Ghana’s refusal to use the Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria, citing national pride and the long-standing football rivalry between the two West African nations as reasons for their decision.
The GFA had turned to Togo after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew approval for the use of Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. Despite discussions held last week, communication between the two football bodies broke down on Thursday, with Togo ultimately declining Ghana’s request.
Now, with a crucial match against Sudan scheduled for October, the GFA is urgently searching for an alternative venue to host the Black Stars’ home games.
The situation has left Ghanaian football fans anxiously awaiting an update on where their national team will play, while concerns grow over the potential impact on Ghana’s AFCON campaign.
