Unbelievable: England manager Southgate told to drop Cole Palmer despite his excellent Chelsea season
England manager Gareth Southgate has controversially been told to drop Chelsea winger Cole Palmer at this summer’s European Championships in Germany.
Palmer has been a revelation for the Blues this season despite the club’s poor form in the Premier League. Since joining from Manchester City in the summer, the 21-year-old has bagged 19 goals in all competitions and seems destined to head to the major international tournament.
However, his playing time at the Euros is less certain considering the form of his ex-teammate Phil Foden and Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham. Both men have earned themselves plaudits for their performances and both have more international experience than the Chelsea man.
ESPN pundit Luis Miguel Echegaray was asked who he would start, bench and drop out of the three attacking midfielders this summer and admitted he was expecting a lot of criticism from Blues supporters for his choice. “I love Jude Bellingham, who doesn’t?” He explained.
“But right now, you can’t not start Phil Foden. And I’m sorry Jude, I’m benching you and I’m dropping Cole Palmer.
“I know Chelsea fans are already tweeting, emailing, messaging me, but you cannot deny the greatness of Phil Foden!” The Stockport-born midfielder stole the show once again on Tuesday night as he curled home a delightful equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Real in the Champions League.
Foden has bagged 22 goals and ten assists in all competitions this season while Bellingham has bagged 20 goals and ten assists in just 33 matches during his debut campaign in La Liga. England fans are hoping to see all three men gain a good amount of minutes in Germany this summer but with competition for places high, it is likely at least one will miss out on what they are hoping for.
