US-based Nigerian man, Chidozie passes away after 18-days in coma
A tragic incident unfolded in Houston, Texas, as 26-year-old Nigerian man, Michael Chidozie, succumbed to spinal injury complications after being shot by his wife, Keaiirra Shavoiyae, during a heated argument.
The confrontation, which took place on March 21 inside their Houston residence, led to Chidozie being shot four times by his wife while their two young children looked on. Shavoiyae, 28, claimed self-defence as the reason behind her actions.
Following the shooting, Chidozie was swiftly taken to Ben Taub Hospital for treatment, where he fought for 18 days on life support before tragically passing away due to his injuries.
The authorities have since charged Shavoiyae with aggravated assault, although it has yet to be upgraded to murder following Chidozie’s death.
Shavoiyae justified her actions by citing self-defence, stating that she feared for her life during the argument that unfolded in their bedroom.

Details about the altercation revealed that it began elsewhere in the house before escalating, culminating in Shavoiyae picking up a pistol and shooting Chidozie multiple times. The report did not disclose whether there was physical violence prior to the shooting.
Chidozie sustained gunshot wounds to his arm, chest, and torso, leaving him gravely injured on the bedroom floor. Shavoiyae was later found by the police in a nearby parking lot with their children, seeking help from witnesses who had alerted the authorities.
Those close to the couple expressed shock at the tragic turn of events, emphasising that they had never witnessed any violence between them before.
Chidozie’s family who prayed for him when he was in the hospital, now trying to raise $70,000 to bring his body back to Nigeria for burial, as it was his dream to one day return to the country.
“His passing has left a profound void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. He was a devoted father, a cherished son, and a dear friend to many,” they said.
“Chidozie’s kind heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering love for his family will forever be remembered and cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him.”
Chidozie’s wife, Shavoiyae was released on bail and is set to face court on May 23, and their children are being cared for by another family.
