Members of a notorious one-chance syndicate believed to be behind a series of robberies and assaults targeting women has been arrested by operatives of the Delta State Police Command.

In a statement on Tuesday, police spokesperson Bright Edafe revealed that one of the suspects, identified as Vincent, confessed to the crimes during an interview at the Ughele A Division.

Vincent described the gang’s tactics, explaining, “We pose as transporters and target vulnerable young women. Once they’re in the vehicle, another gang member joins us, and we drive to isolated areas. We steal their phones, transfer their money, and sometimes assault them.”

According to Vincent, the gang focuses on women and avoids men. The gang operates in two main ways: luring women from clubs or posing as drivers offering rides to unsuspecting women on the streets.

Edafe provided further details on the gang’s modus operandi, highlighting the calculated approach they use to deceive and exploit their victims.

“They operate in two dimensions. One is that they pretend like they are transporters, look for vulnerable young girls. They don’t target men. They target young girls. Pretend like they want to carry them. They will carry them as passengers.

“When they get to about 100 metres away, another of their gang members will be waiting. They will now enter and they will now put the lady in their middle, drive them to a lonely road, at times to the bush, collect their phone, enter their mobile app, transfer all the money they have, collect their phones. At times, they will rape these ladies.

“We have one of the victims with us, though she’s scared and she does not want to talk, and you know we cannot compel her to talk,” he said.
