“We won’t tolerate irresponsible behaviour”
The Edo State Government has issued a stern warning to Labour Party candidate Mr Olumide Akpata following the violence that erupted during his visit to the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Friday, April 12, 2024.
In a statement by Chris Nehikhare, information commissioner in Edo state, the government condemned the violence associated with Akpata’s visit and emphasized its zero-tolerance stance towards such irresponsible behaviour.
The government asserted its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state and vowed to take strict legal action against anyone found guilty, regardless of their status.
”Government has the primary responsibility to ensure the security of lives and property in the state and will spare no effort to ensure that anyone who breaches the peace, no matter how highly placed, will face the full weight of the law.
”We hereby call on all Edo people to go about their lawful businesses without letting relevant agencies progress with their investigation into the said matter,” part of the statement read.
Akpata had earlier alleged that some government-backed thugs disrupted a session he was having with the UNIBEN’s staff.
