What my late Wife did to secure my release from Prison – Ex–President Obasanjo makes revelations
Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo recently shared heartfelt reflections on his time in prison and the crucial role his late wife, Stella, played in securing his freedom.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin, Edo State, Obasanjo recounted how Stella tirelessly advocated for his release.
Obasanjo, who was imprisoned during General Sani Abacha’s regime on allegations of plotting a coup, regained his freedom under AbdulSalam Abubakar’s administration after Abacha’s death, eventually leading to his election as president.
Stella, an Edo native, championed his release and later became Nigeria’s first lady before her passing during Obasanjo’s second term.
Reflecting on her relentless efforts, the 87-year-old remarked, “My late wife went everywhere to ensure I came out of prison alive. She traveled to the Vatican, France, and beyond.
“I owe my freedom to her dedication. No honour is too great for the role she played.”
He expressed deep gratitude for the hospital’s dedication in her memory, adding, “Stella made tremendous contributions to my public life achievements.”
Obasanjo also commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for his commitment to the hospital project, praising him for “starting and finishing well” in office.
He fondly remembered working with former Governor John Odigie Oyegun, whom he called an “outstanding permanent secretary.”
“With this hospital, people will have access to first-class treatment,” Obasanjo concluded. “More power to the governor’s efforts; this is a testament to his dedication to serving Edo State well.”
