Vigilante member arrested by Policemen with pump action gun concealed inside bag of rice

The Anambra State Police Command’s anti-crime squad has apprehended a vigilante member, Enediong Bassey, who was caught with a concealed pump-action gun hidden inside a rice bag.

The arrest took place last Thursday at approximately 6:38 pm in Nkwelle-Ezunaka.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the 25-year-old suspect, a native of Ikono Local Government Area in Akwa-Ibom State, was apprehended by a team led by CSP Emeka Obi, stationed at the 3-3 Divisional Headquarters.

During questioning, Bassey admitted to being part of a local vigilante group and revealed that he had planned to escape with the weapon to join his criminal associates for armed robbery and other illicit activities.

In light of this incident and other concerns regarding the conduct of some security personnel and vigilante groups, Commissioner of Police (CP) Nnaghe Obono Itam has emphasized the need for thorough profiling of all security operatives involved in anti-crime operations.

This initiative, aligned with the principles of Community Policing, aims to enhance safety and professionalism in the state.

Ikenga further noted that the CP has ordered the immediate transfer of Bassey to the anti-robbery squad for a more detailed investigation.
