President Tinubu’s Minister sets up committee to investigate dismissals, suspensions of some Cadets
An 11-member committee tasked with thoroughly investigating and reviewing the recent decisions made by the Disciplinary Committee of the Nigeria Police Academy (POLAC) in Wudil, Kano has been established by the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam. The committee’s mandate is to assess the dismissals and suspensions of cadets, following a surge of appeals from students and their families.
Chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Police Affairs, the committee includes representatives from key institutions such as the Police Service Commission (PSC), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Federal Civil Service Commission, and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, among others.
The committee was inaugurated at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Minister Gaidam emphasized the importance of conducting a comprehensive and fair investigation, especially in light of the passionate appeals received from affected cadets and their guardians.
He explained that the Police Academy’s Disciplinary Committee had previously recommended the suspension and dismissal of cadets for serious offenses, including smoking marijuana, consuming alcohol, and vandalizing property.
“The incidents that have led us here are deeply concerning,” Gaidam remarked. “However, they present us with an important opportunity to reflect, reassess, and improve. Our approach to this investigation must be thorough, fair, and committed to uncovering the truth.”
The Minister made it clear that the objective of the review is not only to address the immediate concerns regarding the affected cadets but also to reinforce the standards of discipline and conduct that underpin the academy’s values.
“Our goal is to uphold the integrity and excellence of the Nigeria Police Academy, a cornerstone of our nation’s security framework,” he stated.
Gaidam underscored that the Police Academy plays a vital role in shaping the future leaders of the Nigerian police force. He stressed that it is essential to preserve the institution’s credibility and prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for criminal behavior or misconduct.
“We cannot allow this respected institution to become a haven for criminals, drug users, or troublemakers. Our mission is clear: to develop disciplined, well-trained police officers who not only understand the law but live by it,” Gaidam said.
The Minister called on the committee members to be aware of the broader implications of their work, noting that the integrity of the academy reflects on the entire policing system in Nigeria.
“Every cadet who graduates from this academy should embody professionalism and uphold the highest standards of virtue. It is our responsibility to ensure that the Nigeria Police Academy remains a beacon of integrity for our nation’s law enforcement,” Gaidam emphasized.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Permanent Secretary Mr. Yusuf Abubakar Argungu, revealed that the Ministry had received numerous requests for a review of the disciplinary actions taken against the cadets.
Following these appeals, the Minister decided to form the committee to ensure fairness and transparency in the process.
